Guiyang releases zero-waste city construction plan

Guiyang, capital of Southwest China's Guizhou province, officially released its plan to become a zero-waste city from 2021 to 2025 on Oct 8.

Since zero-waste efforts began in early 2022, Guiyang has followed national standards, set construction goals, and taken advice from experts to formulate its official construction plan.

According to the plan, Guiyang will set seven major tasks and one featured construction work during the five years.

To accelerate green and low-carbon industrial development, Guiyang will reduce industrial solid waste at the source, improve the utilization of industrial solid waste, and strictly prevent and control pollution caused by industrial solid waste.

To promote the green and low-carbon development of agriculture and rural areas, Guiyang will steadily promote the reduction of agricultural solid waste at the source, establish a recycling system for agricultural solid waste, and improve the utilization and disposal of agricultural solid waste.

To promote a green and low-carbon lifestyle, Guiyang will reduce domestic solid waste at the source, improve the utilization and disposal of domestic solid waste, and improve the management of domestic solid waste.

Guiyang will also reduce construction waste at the source, increase the proportion of green buildings and prefabricated buildings, improve the utilization of construction waste, and enhance the supervision of construction waste disposal.

To control hazardous waste, Guiyang will enhance the supervision system of hazardous waste, strengthen the risk prevention of hazardous waste at the source, enhance the supervision and management of hazardous waste disposal, and complete the transportation and disposal system of medical waste.

To improve solid waste management, Guiyang will establish and improve an environmental management system, environmental management technology system, environmental management market system, and environmental management and supervision system for solid waste.

The plan also states that Guiyang will become a zero-waste city by developing a model of waste reduction for the phosphorus chemical industrial chain, constructing a green cycle model of efficient mountain agriculture, promoting classification of domestic waste, creating domestication example of regional centralized collection of hazardous waste, and launching a special action in the city to reduce waste.
