Amid China's efforts to advance the "toilet revolution" and improve people's quality of life, Guian New Area and Guiyang, capital of Southwest China's Guizhou province, have made great progress in renovating toilets in rural areas in order to improve local sanitation conditions, local media reported.

By Dec 19, Guian New Area and Guiyang completed their 2022 rural toilet improvement plans, and a total of 79,866 toilets have been renovated or built in rural areas, according to the Guiyang bureau of agriculture and rural affairs.

In the least-developed areas, people often use pit latrines, which are unhygienic, filthy, crude, and anxiety-inducing. In 2022, Guian New Area and Guiyang have taken concrete steps to promote the "toilet revolution" and address the seemingly trivial matter that is of major significance to people's quality of life.

More than 97 percent of farmers in Guian New Area and Guiyang are satisfied with the renovation of their toilets, according to a survey by the local government.

The phrase "toilet revolution" often accompanies headlines about China's efforts to improve the state of its public restrooms as well as improving rural toilets and sanitation, and the issue is a serious matter for the country's leadership, which upholds a people-centered development philosophy.

The toilet revolution began as a campaign by the National Tourism Administration to improve public washrooms nationwide, but its scope has since been expanded and it has become part of the country's broader rural development strategy.
