Authority urges to enhance pepper growing industry

Peppers are a vegetable favored by Guiyang residents, while local pepper output has declined, and peppers' quality varies due to unscientific growing manners.

To expand the pepper growing scale in Guiyang, the Guiyang bureau of Agriculture and rural affairs this year has worked with the Pepper Research Institute of Guizhou Academy of Agricultural Sciences to join efforts in standardized cultivation and large-scale processing. In addition, the bureau also introduced related platforms to purchase local peppers.

On Aug 18 and 22, the bureau's officials cooperated with the Guiyang bureau of statistics and invited a team of experts to research the peppers grown at the Machang and Baiyi towns. They believed local peppers are of excellent quality, would drive significant market demand, and have a broader market prospect. This is why the large-scale planting of local peppers looks desirable.

Guiyang will choose suitable farmlands with fertile soil, complete infrastructure, and convenient transportation to build pepper growing bases and use sustainable technologies to achieve a pepper commercialization rate of 90 percent.

More emphasis will be placed on developing regional brands, collaborating with research institutions and universities, and hiring food processing experts to produce competitive products using local peppers.
