On Oct 18, the 2023 demonstration meeting for the utilization of agricultural waste was held in Kaiyang county, Guiyang, Southwest China's Guizhou province, by the Guiyang bureau of agriculture and rural affairs.

New technologies such as biomass pellet fuel and the mechanized collection of the used agricultural film were showcased.

The plastic film residue left in farmland soil can harm the quality and health of cultivated land, disrupt soil structure, cause soil microplastic pollution, and further affect the growth of crops and human health.

Guiyang is exploring the use of the mechanical collection of plastic film. The research and development of the machinery for collecting residual plastic film in farmland is currently being undertaken by the Provincial Plastic Application and Green Low-Carbon Technology Research Center of Guizhou Minzu University.

The recycled waste agricultural film will be processed into products such as plastic baskets and plastic bags, while those that cannot be utilized will receive harmless treatment.

Inside a biomass pellet processing plant in Kaiyang county, all the processing procedures were clearly explained by a company manager.

By collecting straw from nearby tobacco, corn, and other crops, and adding a certain proportion of combustible, low-carbon and clean pellets are produced.

The plant will be put into use by the end of this year, with an estimated annual revenue of over 8 million yuan ($1.11 million).

In recent years, Guiyang has been experimenting with new ways to utilize straw. In 2022, 18 companies and cooperatives (large-scale growers) in the city invested a total of 18 million yuan to recycle 43,200 metric tons of crop straw, achieving a comprehensive straw utilization rate of 89.42 percent.
