The Guiyang bureau of agriculture and rural affairs held a fresh corn variety evaluation trial, field yield assessment, and quality tasting event on July 11 in Xifeng county, Guiyang, capital of Southwest China's Guizhou province.

The event publicly selected 25 nationally or provincially approved fresh corn varieties from across China. All varieties were uniformly planted and steam-cooked for standardized testing. Expert groups conducted on-site harvesting, recording plant counts, yields, and key agronomic traits (e.g. ear length, thickness, and shape).

The top 5 yield performers were Wannuo 2013, Yuebaitiannuo No 10, Zaotiannuo 211, Zhunuo 38, and Huitiannuo No 2.

The top 5 flavor performers, based on sensory quality, aroma, color, taste, stickiness, and sweetness, were Wannuo 2000, Zaotianjianuo 999, Jinyunuo No 9, Wannuo 188, and Yuebaitiannuo No 10.

This initiative identified high-yield, disease-resistant corn varieties suitable for local promotion and provided premium seeds for developing regional specialty brands, increasing farmers' income, and enriching urban food supplies.

Guiyang will continue to deepen seed industry innovation, refine breeding and promotion systems, and build a regional seed technology hub to bolster national food security and agricultural product supply.
