Kaiyang county in Guiyang, capital of Southwest China's Guizhou province, has embraced forest-based agriculture in recent years by cultivating locally suited crops such as Chinese medicinal herbs and mushrooms. This innovative approach aims to drive rural vitalization through a sustainable forest economy.‌

Guizhou Suimancang Agricultural Development Co has established a wild-simulated mushroom planting base at Zuyang Forest Farm by transferring forest land rights. Using a "forest-mushroom symbiosis" model, the company grows specialty varieties such as red pine mushrooms, morels, and oyster mushrooms on a large scale.‌

Zuyang Forest Farm's high forest coverage, combined with its unique conditions — shade, humidity, and selenium-rich soil — creates an ideal environment for shade-loving mushrooms. To prevent market saturation, the company practices off-season planting and applies wild-simulated cultivation techniques to enhance product quality.‌

The forest environment naturally regulates temperature and humidity, significantly reducing the need for artificial climate control. This not only cuts costs, but also produces mushrooms with thicker, more flavorful flesh, earning them high market recognition.‌

The forest-based mushroom industry has delivered both economic and social benefits. Every stage — from planting and maintenance to picking and sorting — requires substantial labor, creating abundant employment opportunities for nearby villagers. This year alone, the mushroom base has employed nearly 100 locals, with an average labor income exceeding $990 per person.‌

The company plans to expand its operations by utilizing over 400 mu (26.67 hectares) of forest land within the base. It will adopt a "company + base + farmers" model to streamline full-chain operations, from strain cultivation to field management and sales.‌

Looking ahead, the company intends to launch a "forest mushroom picking experience" project next year. This will feature a dual-track model combining "market supply + tourist picking," allowing visitors to enjoy harvesting fresh mushrooms themselves.
