The strawberry industry in Huaxi district, Guiyang, capital of Southwest China's Guizhou province, has achieved remarkable results this year, with its cultivation area exceeding 10,000 mu (666.67 hectares).
A seedling breeding base currently covers 1,200 mu, and virus-free seedlings are expected to cover 1,000 mu of production area by next spring. A variety of processed products have also been launched, and the integration of agriculture and tourism marketing is steadily advancing.
Huaxi has promoted independent R&D and the promotion of strawberry seedlings, making significant progress in seedling production capacity, new variety trials, and the use of virus-free seedlings.
The district's strawberry seedling breeding base produces about 45 million strawberry seedlings annually and generates an output value of approximately 40 million yuan (5.69 million).
After meeting local demand, more than 10 million seedlings are sold to other provinces each year, boosting incomes for more than 50 seedling breeding and planting households.
In collaboration with the Guizhou Academy of Agricultural Sciences, trial plantings of independent varieties, including Qianmei Nos 3, 5, and 9, have been conducted, and farmers have introduced more than 10 new varieties, including Yuewang and Jiande Bailu, reserving core resources for variety iteration.
In the future, Huaxi's strawberry industry will be propelled by science, technology, and branding. To strengthen its industrial foundation, the sector will prioritize research on seed sources and promote virus-free seedlings, with a focus on extending the supply chain and securing Geographical Indication certification to enhance brand value.
Model innovation and scale expansion will also be key drivers in advancing the industry toward standardization, branding, and modernization.
